Harris family farm
In 1861, Jesse was registered to have owned to 2 horses, 2 cattle, and 3 hogs on this land. On his 262 acre farm spread, he filed a claim for wartime damage in 1872. He was allowed 390 dollars for hay and cattle that were taken from Union troops during this time. In order to acquire these acres, Jesse Harris had to be a free black. He became one in 1814. This farmland was close to Warrenton in a place called Watertight that Jesse had lived there for 26-27 years before the war began. In August, 1862, Obed bought a 42 acre farm which adjoined his Father's place for a little over 400 dollars. Jesse's sons Alfred and George also worked on this land.
