Harris family census records

The Harris family were prominent farmers in the Centreville and Manassas areas. While there is no single way of knowing why certain family members stopped farming or doing labor to become soldiers, the Civil War can be considered as an idea for a number of reasons. The family farm was invaded by Union soldiers, as evidenced by the war claim filed by Jesse Harris in 1872. The location of the land in Centreville may be the reason behind this. Reconstruction and the rise of sharecroppers in America may have also contributed to the move away from the farm. Below are censuses that detail the occupations of some of the most prominent and well known Harrises.
