Subject
Robert A. Arnold
Description
Despite what his headstone says, Robert Arnold (about 1840-1912) was the son of Bernard Arnold whom is buried two plots away. For the majority of his life, he lived with and worked on his parents farm in Prince William County (Coles District).
Robert Arnold suffered many losses in his later years. In 1877, he married Mary F. Smith. Two days before their third anniversary, Mary died of consumption.
Twenty years later (1900), Robert's father passed away and he became the head of the house. He then hired a 16 year old black girl named Mary Bates for domestic work, whom is shown on the 1900 census.
One year later in 1901, his younger brother James and his mother died within a week from each other. After his losses, he moved in with Jackson Payne (a fellow member of Quantico Baptist Church and is also buried there). He remained at the Payne residence until he died on August 15, 1912 from tuberculosis.
