The articles conveys that the church raised over $100,000 as a 'love offering' to send him off to Maine, so he can build a sailboat, something he has longed to do for quite some time. He was a progressive pastor taking part in the Civil Rights movement, as well as taking controversial stances on homosexuality and divorce during the 1960s. The church remained supportive of him and when it was time for him to leave, their communal support shined through extraordinarily.
