Text

A Case of Assault and Battery, Occured at what is known as "Sweeney's school house" two and a half miles down the pike from this village on Monday the 14th instant, between the teacher Sir. Joseph R. Powell, and, George, and Hiram K. Seaton, two brothers and pupils of nearly adult size; sticks were used by which the teacher was scared. and bruised about the head. Mr. Powell took the wiser course to appeal to the law for redress in the case, rather than to seek it in the usual Virginia fashion, in a personal rencounter. He sued out a warrant which was lodged in the hands of Sheriff Broadwater, by whom the parties were arrested, and brought before Mr, Justice Hawxhurt, who after hearing tho evidence in the case, imposed a fine of $10 and costs on each, and bound them in a penal bond of $100 each, to keep the peace for twelve months, Mr. Arthur Broadwater joining in the bond as security. Mr. Hiram K. Seaton senior, the father of tho two young men, was present and paid the fines at once.
