Description

A list that includes the birth and death of Jesse Harris. This record also contains information about his son Obed Harris. Includes information about his work as a farmer and his immediate family, which included his wife Mima. In 1861, Jesse was registered to have owned to 2 horses, 2 cattle, and 3 hogs on this land. On his 263 acre farm spread, he filed a claim for wartime damage in 1872. He was allowed 390 dollars for hay and cattle that were taken from Union troops during this time. In order to acquire these acres, Jesse Harris had to be a free black. He became one in 1814. This farmland was close to Warrenton in a place called Watertight that Jesse had lived there for 26-27 years before the war began. In August, 1862, Obed bought a 42 acre farm which adjoined his Father's place for a little over 400 dollars.
