Background and Creation of the Jermantown Cemetery

The Jermantown Cemetery was created in 1868 for black citizens who were not allowed to be buried in the Fairfax Cemetery. It is located near the intersection of Route 50 and Route 29 in Fairfax, Virginia. This cemetery is an example of the disparity between treatment of black cemeteries versus white cemeteries. With 22 currently confirmed headstones, previous newspaper articles and letters to government officials put the number at closer to 60 burials.
