This was the original carded record of Thompson as a soldier, serving in Co G, 8th Virginia infantry regiment. These cards include his company muster rolls, hospital records, prison camp registration records, attendance in the army, and reasons for his absences such as wounds and captures, his honorary parole certificate and death certificate. From these records, we can see the extent of bureaucratization of the War Department.
