The Day diary of Richard Marshall Scott Junior. Contains the daily payments and expenses pertaining to the Bush Hill Estate. 

This diary was kept by Richard M. Scott Jr. while he was the owner of Bush Hill. His father Richard M. Scott willed him Bush Hill estate. Scott Jr. lived at Bush Hill with his wife Virginia Gunnell and their 4 children until his death in 1857, from lunch problems. He was Buried at Bush Hill and then moved to Ivy Hill Cemetery. He willed his wife Bush Hill, which she maintained until 1864, eventually having to sell to her cousin because of debt from taxes.

House expenses Dr. To Leash- pc for all soaps as __ $3 

3 barrels of corn at $3- $9 

Notes promissory due to D. Johnston-for 60 days from Aug 19th, payable in Farmers Bank- $500.00

Bush Hill to J.J. Wheat******** for seed, and bacon and fish $78.08 

For U. Sanford Dr- PO him $6.

Notes Promissory Dr- In order of Dennis Johnston as 90 days, payable in Exchange Bank, March 25th 1849- $67.99 

1 year anniversary of Mary Love Death

Dec 19- "taken a fit of coughing during which I discharged considerable blood. Dr. Hoxton thinks I ruptured a blod vessel near my lungs, caused chiefly by over exertion recenetly and particularly induced by a long and hard and cold ride to Fairfax Courthouse yesterday on a hard trotting horse, he advises utmost caution to avoid more serious consequences" 

Nov 13- "Took my friend Mr. Williams down to Mount Vernon today. 

1826- "spread 2 bags of feathers in the garrett to air for a new bed"

June 8- continuation of a most distressing drought:the corn at 10am twisted up and the sheaves of wheat have ceased to run, two facts I never witnessed before so early in the year. 

Aug 9- "Went today to look at George W. Masons estate called Hollin Hall, offerered by its proprietor at $8,000 

 

Recipe for a cough 1819

Take one of Gum Arabic and one of Sugar Candy- dissolve them into a pink of boiling water

-When cold add one Paregoric Elixir and half an once of Antimonical Wine 

-Take Tablespoon whenever cough is troublesome
