Emigrated from Scotland in 1753, John established himself as a dry goods merchant using inheritance for capital. In 1759 he went bankrupt being known as "a man of easy temper and perfectly unsuspicious and credulous... He was greatly imposed upon." John died October 7, 1799 from an illness of only one hour from perfect health.
