Description

This census was taken on August 27, 1870 in the eastern district of Loudoun County. John Thomas Presgraves is listed at age 47 and worked as a farmer. His real estate was valued at 4000 and his personal estate was valued at 1800. He was born in Virginia and cannot read or write. Listed with John is his wife and children. Sarah A., his wife, is aged at 36 and works keeping the home. She, along with all the children, was born in Virginia. Their children are: Eugene (15), Ida F. (13), Ann (7), Lucy (5), Sarah (3) and Mary (11 months). Ida and Eugene are listed as at home and attended school within the year the census was taken. Also listed with the family are two laborers, aged 14 and 27, as well as an additional male who is listed as at home.

Three of John's sisters are also listed on the census. Lydia Whaley is age 55 and works keeping the house. Her sisters, Ann and Amelia Presgraves are listed with her as at home. Lydia's real estate was valued at 500 and her personal estate at 300. Also listed with the sisters is a 12-year-old black male named Harris who is listed as domestic.
