Cartoons ridiculing the lack of freedom in voting for secession were printed in various forms including Hapers Weekly.  "A number of Fairfax residents who would probably have voted against secession stayed away from the pools because of intimidation and threats of violence by secessionists.  Fairfax voted overwhelmingly in favor of seceding" (Hickin 319).
