Black versus White

Wandering through the one acre-sized plot, there are about 22 gravestones, all in varying stages of disrepair. One of the stones is so weather-worn, it is impossible to read the inscription, and another stone has been sliced off angularly with the other half is completely missing.

The Fairfax City Cemetery, where members of the Jermantown Cemetery would have been buried if they were not black, is picturesque. Winding roads traverse the freshcut grass, monuments, and well kept burial plots.

The East End Cemetery of Richmond, Virginia is another example of the disparities of upkeep between historically black vs. white cemeteries. With over 16,000 suspected burials and 3,000 gravestones with only about 800 that are legible, there are over 10,000 American black citizens that are unaccounted for.
